もう四月も間近だというのにまだ温かくなりませんが、それでも朝の光や空気は春らしくなってきました。

今はというと５月のコンサートに向けてコーラスの曲を書いています。

歌詞を載せてみます。

器楽曲に比べると、歌の方がやはり瞬発力で書くようなところがあって、ずいぶん作曲の行程も違うなあと感じます。この曲で約１分半なので、もう一曲同じ詩人の詩で書けたらと思っています。

Although it is almost April, still it is cold these days. But I feel the morning light and its atmosphere is not the one of winter anymore. Now I am writing a choral piece for the May concert. The words are up above. I found that the process of writing music is really different between writing a song and writing an instrumental music. I feel writing a song is more about how to make the words into music than how to make melodies. This piece is just about 1 and half minutes long, so I am going to write one more short one.

弦楽オーケストラ

昨日は雨まじりの雪が降って、朝にはうっすらと車の上に雪が積もっていました。数日前には春が来たと思ったのに、寒さも行きつ戻りつです。

最近はもっぱら、昨年書いた弦楽オーケストラ曲を今度の４月の演奏会で演奏してもらおうと人に演奏を頼み歩いています。ストリングプレーヤーを見ると「あの人にもう聞いたっけ。」と思う毎日です。21人集めるのが目標です。

It was snowing last night, and I even saw a slight layer of snow on the roof of cars this morning. The weather these days are weird; there were a few nice warm days last week before this snow. Anyway, I am hoping that the warm spring to come soon.

For one of my composition projects, I am now trying to get performers for the premiere of my String Orchestra piece on the composer's concert on April. My goal is to get 21 players, so these days I am always looking for somebody who plays string instrument.

友達がウェブにリンクを載せてくれていて、ニューヨークタイムズによる震災の写真を見ました。

元は穏やかであったであろう街の変わり果てた風景、そこに今生きている人たちの表情。今まで見たニュースや読んだ情報のどれよりも、そこで起こった惨禍が自分に身近なこととして直感的に伝わりました。

なかなか書けずにいたブログですが、今日から再開していきたいと思います。

From the link which was posted by my friend on Facebook, I saw the Photographs of Japan after earthquake and tsunami taken by NYTimes. There are familiar Japanese sceneries and people in the photograph but were deeply hurt. As I saw them, I finally realized what happened there. I did not feel like write anything about my life here for the past few days, but I will start again today.

休み明け

春休みがあけて、今日から学校が始まりました。

学校側では日本人学生とその家族が大丈夫かどうか一人一人確認してくれているようでした。久しぶりに会う友達も心配してくれていました。

自分の国で災害の犠牲になった人や今まさに苦しんでいる人がいるのに、遠く離れて無事な自分を申し訳なく思うことがあります。けれど、離れていても私はその人たちに救ってもらったのだと思います。その事に感謝して日々大切に生き、自分にできることをみつけたいと思います。

School has started again after the spring break today. School Dean was trying to talk to all the Japanese students to know their safety and their family's situation. Many of my non Japanese friends asked me about my family's safety also. I was moved and appreciated their concern.

I feel guilty for Japanese people who has involved in this catastrophe, since I am safe here. But at the same time, I believe I was saved by them. I might have faced the disastrous situation if I were in Japan, but I have not. So I will appreciate more that I am alive, and would like to find something I can do to help them.

地震

朝起きて日本の地震のことを知りました。

幸いにも家族は無事でしたが、ニュースなどで各地の大変な様子を見ては信じられない気持ちです。

アメリカに来る時に、何かあるとしたら自分の身に起こるだろうと勝手に思っていましたが、故郷の方に一大事があるとは思いませんでした。

少しでも被害が少なくすむよう祈っています。

I found that there were severe earthquake in Japan after I got up this morning. Fortunately, my family is fine, but I was shocked at the catastrophe reported by Japanese TV news.

When I left Japan for studying abroad, I prepared myself that something dangerous might happen to me during my stay outside my country, but I did not think that this disaster would happen to there.

I hope the damage caused by this earthquake to be held minimum.

Romeo et Juliette

今日は昨日に引き続き、メトロポリタンオペラにグノーの「ロミオとジュリエット」を観に行ってきました。当日の学割チケットを朝買いにいくと安かっただけでなく、なんと最前列の席でした。指揮者もオーケストラも舞台も間近に観られてとても楽しめました。あっぱれ学生券。

今晩は雨風がすごくて、劇場への行き帰りの間に傘が10回近くひっくり返って大変でした。NYに来るまで、雨で傘が壊れるなんて信じられませんでしたが今は納得です。

I went to see Gounod's opera, Romeo et Juliette, at the metropolitan opera tonight. Luckily, I was able to buy the student rush tickets in the morning, and addition to that they were cheep, the seats were at the first row. I enjoyed feeing the conductor, the orchestra, and the stage very close. Bravo, student rush tickets!

By the way, it was really rainy and windy tonight. On the way home from Met, my umbrella turned over nearly 10 times. Before I came to NY, I did not believe that an umbrella could be broken by heavy wind, but now I totally have understood how it happens.

Boris Godunov

今日はオペラを観に行ってきました。ムソルグスキーの「ボリス・ゴドゥノフ」。

実在のロシア皇帝を題材にしたオペラですが、人生ってなんだろうなと考えさせられました。

人生は判断の連続で、どんな判断にも後悔がつきまといます。それでも自分の下した判断が「自分にとって、また周りの人にとって正しかった。」もしくは「そう決断することがそのときの自分の運命だった。」と思わなければやっていけないんだと思います。

ともかくオペラはやっぱりいいなあと思いました。

I went to see Mussorgsky's opera, Boris Godunov, at the metropolitan opera tonight. The story is about the life of historical Russian ruler Boris Godunov, and it made me think of the difficulties to decide anything in life. We have to decide many things throughout our lives, and there are always regrets following. So I think we have no way than to believe any decision we made was "right" for ourselves and people around us from the viewpoint of our fate. Anyway, I enjoyed the opera.

Bronx Zoo

だいぶ開いてしまいました。。。

いたって元気だったのですが自分でも驚く程にあっという間に春休みモードに入ってしまい、もう一週間も経ってしまいました。実際いろいろ書きたい事はあったのですが、ぼちぼち書いていきたいと思います。

昨日は友達とブロンクスの動物園に行ってきました。予報では雨ということだったので心配したのですが、園内にいる間晴れていてくれたので助かりました。ものすごく広い動物園だったので、最初の動物に会うまでにずいぶん歩きましたが、かなり沢山の生き物を見られました。写真は鳥ばかりですが、ほ乳類、は虫類、両生類などなど色々と見て、本当は地球には人間以外の色々な生き物がいたんだなあとあらためて思いました。

It has been a while since I wrote last time.. I was fine and was thinking of writing something, but I simply was not able to find the time to do that. I have been in such a spring break mode...

Anyway, I went to Bronx Zoo with my friends yesterday. We were glad that it was mostly sunny even though the forecast said that it was going to rain. The zoo was extremely large; we walked a lot and saw many different kinds of animals. I had never realized that those animals had existed since I would never encounter them in my daily life.
